About Me

I’m a residency-trained Doctor of Physical Therapy and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, with a degree in Kinesiology from The Ohio State University and over a decade of experience in strength sports.

My work sits at the intersection of rehabilitation and performance. I help active adults and athletes not only get out of pain—but build the strength, mobility, and resilience needed to stay active long term.

Based in the greater Portland, Oregon area, I provide personalized physical therapy and performance coaching designed around your goals—whether that means returning from injury, improving performance, or simply moving and feeling better in your everyday life.

What Does “Beyond the Barbell” Mean?

“Beyond the Barbell” is more than a name—it’s a philosophy.

It doesn’t mean you need to train with barbells. Instead, the barbell represents a tool—one of many—that can help you build strength, resilience, and capacity.

For me, barbells have always been a means to an end. They’ve supported my ability to pursue the activities I care about—whether that’s football, skiing, mountaineering, or beach volleyball. Strength training wasn’t the goal. It was the foundation that made everything else possible.

That’s the approach I bring to my clients.

I help you go beyond the barbell—using strength and movement as tools to improve your performance, reduce injury risk, and keep you doing what you love for as long as possible.

Beyond The Gym

Hey there, I'm Josh, originally from Ohio but now loving life in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. My journey into fitness and wellness began when I experienced a shoulder injury. It made me realize the incredible impact that pain-free movement can have on our lives. Now, I work as a physical therapist and strength coach, helping people enhance their strength and movement while improving the human experience.

Beyond the gym, I have a wide range of hobbies that I'm equally passionate about. I've spent the past few years exploring with my partner and dog. Whether it's hiking, backpacking, fishing, skiing, or scuba diving, I'm all about immersing myself in nature and new experiences.
